I use the word sissy reluctantly because i can’t think of another word for a male tomboy. But I can think of movies and books where girls act tomboyish and it is always seen as cute or positive or fun, but you hardly ever see the opposite for guys… is this because it is frowned upon so much, or is it because people do want to encourage tomboyism but not the opposite for boys or does it just show bias in the way we see different people. Just wondering how others see this or even if they noticed.

society doesnt accept it yet.
About 99% of ‘baddies’ in movies are guys so it’s all just discrimination against men. Women wouldn’t put up with that level of discrimination.
because men are far superior to women
Because we live in a male dominated society where anything masculine is a positive and anything feminine is a negative.
Its almost like a tom boy is a step up for a girl, so they get a higher postion, and a sissy-boy is like a step down from being a reg. guy, maybe thats why they don’t use em… lolz
I don’t like either.
politics mon, The feminist movement want equal rights so they have to appear equal. Most action heros in todays movies are either black men or white women. The evil or goofy guys are typically white. You have to roll back the film to 1950s to see otherwise. Its power and who is in power and who wants power.
Good Question and no I never noticed
Because gender roles are more confined for men and boys than for women and girls.
Hm. Can you think of any other instances in history where an oppressed people in a society have more freedom than the supposed oppressors?
It’s not bias or stories made up for the movies. It’s just so true in most cases (I don’t say all) that girl born as tomboys are always naturally funny, loves fun and are very friendly. Besides that, as tomboys, girls are more active, loves fun, challenging activities and they are tough. This is where their positive thinking and motivation comes in.
Easiest way to say this is either that it’s because we live in a “male-dominant society” and thus it’s best for anyone to try to be more “manly” or that it’s simply the way the writer views such stereotypes.
I know in my case I’ve met many tomboys who I enjoyed their company, but not always. Normally those girls get labelled as “butch” which is the negative version of tomboy.
Likewise “sissies” in general are negative because of what their stereotype implies. However the reverse of that negativism is metro-sexual or effeminate. Neither of these are negatives on their own but when combined with other characteristics they tend to be meant as negative.
Sissy is more than just being effeminate. Many guys these days have habits that are considered to be more feminine than masculine, but that doesn’t make them a sissy. A good example of that I know is a friend of mine who spent more time getting ready to go than any girl I’ve ever known. Yet he was by no means a sissy for it since he did his share of sports and such, but it was more the attitude he had towards things. It’s hard to describe I guess. I’m trying rather hard not to say, “sissy just means you’re being ***.” because it’s not but that’s how it often gets portrayed.
I guess people are not ready to except guys as “girly”.
…i guess its not like bias or something…
…the real fact is >> sissy creatures doesn’t have that nice/cute look >> especially to most of the guys out there…
…girls which are beautiful/gorgeous who tends to be boyish may sometime or could be most of the time appears unique and challenging in terms of how people going to approach to them…
>> but obviously, its better to be tough than to be like chicken…:P
The first thing that came to mind is the movie Monster starring Charlize Theron playing Aileen Wuornos. She was a major tomboy (at least that’s what I thought) and it was really disturbing.
I’m a bit confused with a sissy guy being the same as a male tomboy. Maybe I’m just not understanding the question. I don’t know of a male tomboy, I think that would just be a guy.
Really? I see it quite often, and I usualyy like the character more than the tomboy girl. I think perhaps ‘effeminate’ boys are usually either flamboyantly fun or abominably sweet. just an observation. Perhaps because I am female I view them differently to yourself?
Metrosexuals are **** in my opinion.
I think the word you are looking for is effeminate, metro-sexual maybe?
Hollywood doesn’t seem to be able to distinguish the difference between *** and “girlie”/metro-sexual. Us men are supposed to stink, be able to punch out a moose and belch. Getting your nails done or any kind of salon activity makes you *** and that’s a totally different movie.
Think about it. Can you imagine Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry getting a manicure in the middle of the movie?
i think this basically goes back to a belief that women are inferior to men. Therefore a woman being tomboyish is almost viewed as her taking a step up while the opposite may be viewed as a male taking a step down.
